About Fort Saskatchewan Veterinary Clinic

Fort Saskatchewan Veterinary Clinic is a small animal veterinary practice in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. We employ four veterinarians, six registered veterinary technologists, multiple veterinary receptionists, and weekend staff. The business has been serving Fort Saskatchewan and areas of Strathcona, Lamont, and Sturgeon counties for over 40 years.

We’ve been in our current location downtown since January of 2008.  Our building is equipped with exam rooms, a treatment room, a radiology room, and an isolation room. We enjoy keeping current with new technologies and diagnostic equipment though our main enjoyment is still meeting your pets. Please come down to see us!

History of Our Clinic

The Fort Saskatchewan Veterinary Clinic has existed in various forms since the 1920s. As assumed by the name, it has always been located in Fort Saskatchewan though there were satellite offices in the past in Gibbons, AB. Dr. McCartney had been an owner of the clinic since 1980. In his time, it had progressed from a mixed animal practice to a small animal practice. In the mixed animal days, everything from cattle to horses to ostriches to dogs to cats to ferrets to pocket pets was seen.

The population of Fort Saskatchewan grew from approximately 8,000 people in the 1980s to approximately 22,000 people today. Dr. McCartney noted that the practice of veterinary medicine has changed from a field of minimal technology with physical exams as the main diagnostic tool to a field of diagnostic and surgical technology that is keeping pace with human medicine. As the veterinary industry has become more specialized and the city of Fort Saskatchewan has grown, we transitioned to the small animal practice we have today.
